Unlike the main Pokémon role-playing games, Mystery Dungeon begins with the player becoming a Pokémon. Players form rescue teams, explore randomly generated dungeons, recruit other Pokémon, and fight using turn-based moves. The series was developed by Chunsoft, later known as Spike Chunsoft.

The platform is easy to confuse because Blue Rescue Team was the Nintendo DS counterpart, and later Mystery Dungeon games appeared on several systems.
