On which day is the White House Easter Egg Roll traditionally held?

The story behind the answer

The White House Easter Egg Roll is traditionally held on Easter Monday.

The event takes place on the South Lawn of the White House, where children roll decorated hard-boiled eggs across the grass using long-handled spoons. Although its format has changed over time, the event has remained a public Easter celebration hosted by the president and first family.

The modern White House tradition dates to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes opened the presidential grounds to children after Congress passed legislation restricting egg-rolling activities on the Capitol grounds. Earlier egg rolls had taken place at the Capitol and other Washington locations.

Easter Monday is the day immediately after Easter Sunday in the Christian calendar. The date changes each year because Easter is a movable feast. The White House event can therefore fall anywhere from late March to late April, depending on the year’s Easter date.
