On which date did the Wall Street crash’s second major 1929 selling day, Black Tuesday, occur?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the Wall Street crash’s second major 1929 selling day, occurred on October 29, 1929.

On that day, about 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, a record that stood for decades. Prices plunged as investors rushed to sell, and the panic followed earlier turmoil on Black Thursday, October 24, and Black Monday, October 28.

The crash did not cause every feature of the Great Depression by itself. Economic weakness, banking failures, falling demand, debt, and policy decisions all helped turn a market collapse into a much broader crisis. The crash did, however, severely damage confidence and wealth.

Black Tuesday is sometimes mistakenly treated as the only day of the 1929 crash. In reality, the market continued falling after October 29 and reached its low in July 1932. The event remains one of the most famous financial collapses in modern history.
