On which date did the U.S. stock market suffer the 1929 crash's most famous “Black Tuesday” sell-off?

The story behind the answer

The 1929 Wall Street Crash’s most famous “Black Tuesday” sell-off occurred on October 29, 1929.

Trading volume reached roughly 16 million shares that day on the New York Stock Exchange, as investors rushed to sell after prices had already fallen sharply. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped about 12%, following a decline of almost 13% on Black Monday, October 28.

The crash did not by itself create the entire Great Depression, but it destroyed wealth, damaged confidence, and exposed weaknesses in banks and businesses. The Dow continued falling until July 1932, when it was about 89% below its September 1929 peak.

A common mix-up is calling October 24 the only crash date. October 24, known as Black Thursday, saw an earlier panic, while October 29 became the best-known single day of the episode.
