On which date did the U.S. stock-market crash known as Black Tuesday occur in 1929?

The story behind the answer

The U.S. stock-market crash known as Black Tuesday occurred on October 29, 1929.

Black Tuesday followed Black Thursday on October 24 and Black Monday on October 28. On October 29, roughly 16 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, overwhelming the market’s trading systems and intensifying the collapse in share prices.

The crash did not by itself cause the entire Great Depression, but it badly damaged confidence, reduced household wealth, and exposed weaknesses in banks, businesses, and heavily leveraged investments. The Dow Jones Industrial Average continued falling after 1929 and did not regain its pre-crash peak until 1954.

A common mix-up is treating Black Tuesday as the only crash day. It was the most famous day in a sequence of severe losses during late October 1929, while the wider economic depression developed over several subsequent years.
