On which date did the New York Stock Exchange's famous 1929 crash day, Black Tuesday, occur?

The story behind the answer

Black Tuesday, the most famous crash day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, occurred on October 29, 1929.

Trading on the New York Stock Exchange became frantic as investors rushed to sell shares. The date followed Black Thursday on October 24 and Black Monday on October 28, two earlier days of severe losses. On Black Tuesday, approximately 16 million shares changed hands, setting a trading-volume record that stood for decades.

The crash did not by itself create every problem of the Great Depression, but it sharply damaged confidence and helped expose weaknesses in the banking and credit system. Share prices had risen dramatically during the 1920s, often with borrowed money, making forced selling especially destructive.

A common mix-up is treating October 24 as the only 1929 crash date. Black Thursday was the first major break, while October 29 is the date most commonly identified as the climax of the collapse. The Dow Jones Industrial Average continued falling until 1932.
