“Eleanor Rigby” first appeared on the Beatles’ 1966 album Revolver.

The song was released on 5 August 1966, both on Revolver and as a double A-side single paired with “Yellow Submarine.” On the album, it is the second track, following George Harrison’s “Taxman.” Its stark story of two isolated people marked a major change from the Beatles’ earlier love-song image.

Paul McCartney developed the song, while the credited Lennon–McCartney partnership reflects contributions and ideas from the Beatles’ circle. George Martin arranged the distinctive accompaniment for an octet of four violins, two violas and two cellos. None of the Beatles played instruments on the recording, although John Lennon and Harrison contributed harmony vocals.

A common mix-up is assuming it came from Yellow Submarine because the song appears in that 1968 animated film.
