On what exact date was Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice first published?

The story behind the answer

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was first published on 28 January 1813. Thomas Egerton issued the novel in London as a three-volume hardcover edition, a common publishing format for novels of the period.

Austen’s name did not appear on the title page. The book was credited to “the Author of Sense and Sensibility,” linking it to her successful first published novel while preserving her anonymity. Austen had originally developed the story under the working title First Impressions, and an earlier version had been offered to a publisher in 1797.

The first edition was advertised in The Morning Chronicle at a price of 18 shillings. It sold out, leading to a second edition in October 1813 and a third edition in 1817. The novel was Austen’s second published book but, according to its publication history, her third to be written. Its success helped establish the anonymous author behind the earlier novel as a significant literary voice, even though Austen’s identity was not publicly printed on her books during her lifetime.
