On what date was the United Nations officially established?

The story behind the answer

The United Nations was officially established on 24 October 1945.

The organization came into existence after the Second World War, when governments sought a framework for international cooperation and collective security. The UN Charter had been signed in San Francisco on 26 June 1945, but it became legally effective on 24 October after the required ratifications were deposited.

The founding members included the countries that ratified the Charter, including the major Allied powers. The UN replaced the League of Nations, which had been created after the First World War but had failed to prevent another global conflict. The new organization placed special emphasis on maintaining international peace and security.

United Nations Day is observed every year on 24 October. The UN’s main organs include the General Assembly, Security Council, International Court of Justice, and Secretariat. Its headquarters are in New York City, although the organization operates worldwide and has major offices in Geneva, Nairobi, and Vienna.
