On what date was the second atomic bomb dropped on Japan before its surrender?

The story behind the answer

The second atomic bomb was dropped on Japan on 9 August 1945.

The United States dropped the plutonium bomb known as Fat Man on Nagasaki on 9 August. The B-29 bomber Bockscar carried the weapon, which detonated over the city shortly after 11 a.m. local time. The first atomic bomb, Little Boy, had been dropped on Hiroshima three days earlier, on 6 August.

The Nagasaki bombing occurred on the same day that Soviet forces began their offensive against Japanese forces in Manchuria. These events intensified the Japanese leadership’s debate over whether continuing the war was possible. Emperor Hirohito later supported accepting the Potsdam Declaration.

The dates are often confused because Japan’s surrender announcement came only days later. The public announcement occurred on 15 August, while the formal surrender ceremony took place on 2 September.
