On what date was the Japanese Instrument of Surrender signed, ending World War II?

The story behind the answer

The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, 1945, formally ending World War II.

The ceremony took place aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Japanese representatives signed first, followed by representatives of the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.

Japan had announced its acceptance of the Allied surrender terms in August, but the September ceremony completed the legal and military process. This distinction explains why sources use both August and September dates when discussing Japan’s surrender.

August 15 is associated with Emperor Hirohito’s radio announcement in Japan, while August 14 was celebrated as V-J Day in much of the United States because of the time difference. September 2 marks the formal signing of the surrender document itself.
