The Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17, 1775, during the American Revolutionary War.
The battle occurred during the Siege of Boston, shortly after fighting began at Lexington and Concord. Colonial forces occupied positions on the Charlestown Peninsula, including Breed’s Hill, to threaten British control of Boston Harbor.
British troops attacked the fortified colonial position in multiple assaults. The British eventually captured the redoubt after the defenders ran out of ammunition and withdrew, making the battle a British victory. However, British casualties were much higher than those suffered by the colonial forces.
Although it is called the Battle of Bunker Hill, most of the fighting took place on nearby Breed’s Hill. The battle demonstrated that colonial forces could stand against experienced British regulars and encouraged wider colonial resistance.
