On what date was the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945?

The story behind the answer

The atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

The United States Army Air Forces used the B-29 bomber Enola Gay to deliver Little Boy, a uranium-based atomic bomb. The bomb detonated over Hiroshima during the morning, destroying much of the city and killing tens of thousands of people immediately or soon afterward.

Hiroshima was a major military and industrial center, but it also contained a large civilian population. The bombing became the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare. Japan did not surrender immediately; the Soviet Union declared war on Japan on August 8, and a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9.

The bombings remain central to debates about the end of World War II, civilian casualties, military necessity, and the dawn of the nuclear age. Japan announced acceptance of the Allied surrender terms on August 15.
