On what date was revolutionary leader Georges Danton executed?
Answer
April 5, 1794
Answer
April 5, 1794
Georges Danton was executed on April 5, 1794, after being convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal during the Reign of Terror.
A leading revolutionary and former minister of justice, Danton had helped bring down the monarchy in 1792 and had served on the Committee of Public Safety. By 1794, however, his calls for moderation and an end to executions alarmed the radical government led by Maximilien Robespierre.
Danton and his allies were arrested on March 30 and tried in early April on charges including conspiracy, corruption, and venality. The proceedings were highly political, and the tribunal was allowed to continue despite irregularities in its composition. Danton was guillotined in Paris alongside fifteen others, including Camille Desmoulins and Marie-Jean Hérault de Séchelles.
The date is sometimes confused with the executions of other major revolutionary figures. Robespierre was executed several months later, on July 28, 1794, after the events of 9 Thermidor.
