August 1, 1998
Answer
August 1, 1998
Pocket Monsters Stadium was released for the Nintendo 64 in Japan on August 1, 1998.
The game was developed and published by Nintendo and focused on three-dimensional Pokémon battles. Unlike the Game Boy role-playing games, it did not center on a long story campaign. Instead, players selected teams, entered battle formats, and used the Nintendo 64’s hardware to see Pokémon attack with animated 3D models.
Pocket Monsters Stadium is often confused with Pokémon Stadium, the later international release. The Japanese game was never released outside Japan and supported only 40 Pokémon because of development and technical limitations. The internationally released Pokémon Stadium arrived in Japan in 1999 under a Japanese title equivalent to Pokémon Stadium 2 and supported all 151 first-generation species.
The game also connected with the Game Boy Pokémon titles through the Nintendo 64 Transfer Pak. Players could use compatible Pokémon from Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow in battles, linking portable progress with home-console competition.
This early stadium title helped establish 3D battling as an important direction for the franchise.
