On what date was Nagasaki hit by the second atomic bomb in World War II?

The story behind the answer

Nagasaki was hit by the second atomic bomb in World War II on August 9, 1945.

The United States dropped the plutonium bomb Fat Man over Nagasaki three days after Little Boy was dropped on Hiroshima. The Nagasaki explosion occurred at approximately 11:02 a.m. local time. The target had originally been Kokura, but cloud and smoke obscured the city, so the B-29 Bockscar proceeded to its secondary target.

Nagasaki’s industrial facilities included shipyards, steel works, and arms production. The city’s hills limited the blast’s spread compared with the flatter terrain of Hiroshima, although the bombing still caused immense destruction and loss of life. Fat Man was the second and, to date, last nuclear weapon used in warfare.

Japan announced its acceptance of the Allied surrender terms six days later, on August 15 Japan time. The formal Instrument of Surrender was signed on September 2, so the bombing date belongs to the final military phase rather than the formal signing ceremony itself.
