On what date was Nagasaki bombed during the events leading to Japan’s 1945 surrender?

The story behind the answer

Nagasaki was bombed on August 9, 1945, during the final events leading to Japan’s surrender.

The United States dropped the plutonium implosion bomb known as Fat Man over Nagasaki. The bombing followed the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6 and occurred on the same day the Soviet Union launched its invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria.

The target was initially Kokura, but cloud cover and smoke prevented the bomber crew from making the required visual approach. The aircraft instead proceeded to its secondary target, Nagasaki, where a break in the clouds allowed the bomb to be released.

Nagasaki’s bombing is one part of the surrender crisis, which also involved Soviet military action, political debate in Tokyo, and Emperor Hirohito’s intervention.
