6 August 1945
Answer
6 August 1945
Hiroshima was hit by the first atomic bomb used in warfare on 6 August 1945.
At 8:15 a.m. local time, the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped the uranium bomb Little Boy over Hiroshima. The bomb detonated above the city during the final weeks of World War II. Hiroshima was selected as the primary target because it was a major urban and military center that had not previously suffered the same level of destruction as several other Japanese cities.
The attack was followed three days later, on 9 August, by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki with the plutonium bomb Fat Man. These were the only wartime uses of nuclear weapons.
Hiroshima’s destruction intensified the crisis within Japan, although historians continue to debate the relative importance of the atomic bombings, the Soviet declaration of war, and other factors in the decision to surrender. Japan announced its acceptance of the Allied terms on 15 August and signed the surrender document on 2 September.
