On what date was Hiroshima bombed with the atomic weapon Little Boy?
Answer
August 6, 1945
Answer
August 6, 1945
Hiroshima was bombed with the atomic weapon Little Boy on August 6, 1945.
The B-29 Enola Gay released the weapon at approximately 8:15 a.m. local time. Little Boy used a uranium-235 gun-type design, and the blast destroyed large sections of Hiroshima while causing extensive fires and casualties.
The attack was followed on August 9 by the bombing of Nagasaki with Fat Man, a plutonium implosion weapon. On August 8, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and began military operations against Japanese forces in Manchuria.
August 6 should not be confused with August 9, the date of the second atomic bombing, or August 15, when Hirohito's surrender broadcast was heard in Japan. Japan's formal surrender document was signed on September 2.
