Answer
August 15, 1945
Answer
August 15, 1945
Hirohito's surrender broadcast was transmitted to the Japanese public on August 15, 1945.
The recorded address aired at noon Japan Standard Time through the Japan Broadcasting Corporation, commonly known as NHK. In it, Emperor Hirohito announced that Japan had accepted the terms of the Allied declaration and would end the war.
The date can cause confusion because the announcement reached the United States and parts of the Americas on August 14 because of the international date line and time differences. September 2 was different again: that was the date of the formal signing ceremony aboard USS Missouri.
The speech was recorded late on August 14 at the Imperial Palace rather than broadcast live. Military officers opposed to surrender attempted to prevent the recording from being aired, but the effort failed. The preserved recording is historically important because it marked the first radio address by a Japanese emperor to the general public.
