On what date was Game Freak officially incorporated in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Game Freak was officially incorporated in Japan on April 26, 1989.

The company grew out of a video game fanzine created by Satoshi Tajiri. Tajiri and Ken Sugimori transformed the publication into a game-development group, eventually formalizing Game Freak as a company.

Before Pokémon, Game Freak developed games including the puzzle title Quinty, which Namco published in 1989. The studio later began work on Pokémon for Nintendo’s Game Boy, a project that took approximately six years to finish.

Game Freak’s corporate founding predates Pokémon’s 1996 launch by almost seven years. That distinction matters because the company, the Pokémon franchise, and The Pokémon Company are related but not identical: Game Freak develops many games, while The Pokémon Company manages broader licensing and franchise operations.
