Game Freak was officially incorporated on April 26, 1989. The company later became the principal developer of the Pokémon video-game series.
Game Freak began as a Japanese video-game magazine created by Satoshi Tajiri. Tajiri and his collaborators gradually transformed the publication into a game-development group, and the company’s formal incorporation gave that effort a lasting business structure.
Before Pokémon, Game Freak developed other games, including the puzzle title Quinty, which was published by Namco in 1989. The team’s experience on earlier projects helped it build the technical and creative skills needed for a much larger role in Pokémon’s development.
Pokémon was not released immediately after incorporation. Tajiri’s Pocket Monsters project underwent years of development before Pokémon Red and Green reached Japan in 1996. Game Freak remains associated with the main series, while Creatures and Nintendo also became central partners in the franchise’s ownership and publishing structure.
