Answer
April 26, 1989
Game Freak was officially incorporated on April 26, 1989.
Game Freak began as a Japanese video game fanzine created by Satoshi Tajiri, who published its first issue in 1983. Tajiri later worked with illustrator Ken Sugimori and other contributors to transform the magazine into a game development company.
The company’s first published game was Quinty, known internationally as Mendel Palace, released by Namco in 1989. Game Freak later pitched the creature-collecting concept that became Pokémon to Nintendo, beginning the long development of Pocket Monsters Red and Green.
The company name is therefore older than the Pokémon franchise itself. Game Freak is often confused with The Pokémon Company, which was established later to manage Pokémon licensing, publishing, marketing, and related business activities. Game Freak remains best known as the developer of the main Pokémon role-playing games.
