Answer
August 28, 1955
Emmett Till was abducted from his great-uncle’s home in Mississippi on August 28, 1955.
Till was a 14-year-old African American boy from Chicago visiting relatives in Money, Mississippi. Earlier, on August 24, he had interacted with Carolyn Bryant at a local grocery store. Four days later, Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam took Till from the home of his great-uncle, Moses Wright.
Till was murdered, and his mutilated body was found in the Tallahatchie River on August 31. His mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral in Chicago so the public could see what had happened.
The all-white jury acquitted Bryant and Milam, although they later confessed in a paid magazine interview. The case became a powerful catalyst for civil rights activism.
