On what date is Comet Swift–Tuttle predicted to make its closest approach to Earth after the 2026 Perseid shower?

The story behind the answer

Comet Swift–Tuttle is predicted to make its closest approach to Earth on August 5, 2126, after the 2026 Perseid shower.

The comet follows a long, repeating orbit that brings it relatively near Earth’s path. Current calculations place its 2126 close approach at about 0.153 astronomical units, or roughly 22.9 million kilometres from Earth. That is close in astronomical terms but not a predicted impact.

Swift–Tuttle’s 2126 encounter is separate from the annual Perseid display. The shower happens when Earth crosses dust left along the comet’s orbit, whereas the comet itself returns through the inner Solar System only about once every 133 years.

Older calculations produced uncertainty about the timing and briefly raised concern about a possible future collision. Improved observations and orbital modelling now show no threat over the next two thousand years. The comet is expected to pass Earth safely in August 2126.
