On what date is America250’s time capsule scheduled to be opened?

America250’s time capsule is scheduled to be opened on July 4, 2276.

The capsule was prepared for burial in Philadelphia during the 2026 semiquincentennial. Its planned opening date is 250 years later, on the 500th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

This creates a long-term historical bridge between the nation’s 250th and 500th anniversaries. Future Americans are intended to encounter artifacts and messages selected to represent the country at the time of the semiquincentennial.

The capsule’s date is easy to confuse with 2076, which will be the United States’ 300th anniversary. It is also distinct from July 2, the date Congress voted for independence in 1776; the capsule follows the July 4 anniversary associated with the Declaration.
