On what date does the Rose Parade traditionally take place in Pasadena, California?

The story behind the answer

The Rose Parade traditionally takes place on January 1 in Pasadena, California.

Officially called the Tournament of Roses Parade, it is held on New Year's Day and is famous for floats decorated with natural materials such as flowers, seeds, bark, and leaves. Marching bands and equestrian units also travel along the route.

The parade began in 1890, organized by members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club. Their goal was to showcase Southern California's mild winter climate to people living in colder parts of the United States. The event later became linked with the Rose Bowl football game.

A longstanding scheduling rule moves the parade to January 2 when January 1 falls on a Sunday. This exception prevents a conflict with Sunday church services and is known as the “Never on Sunday” rule.
