Answer
29 April 1945
United States troops liberated Dachau concentration camp on 29 April 1945.
Dachau, established near Munich in March 1933, was the first regular concentration camp created by the Nazi regime. It became a model for the camp system, and its prisoners included political opponents, Jewish prisoners, clergy, Roma, and many others persecuted by Nazi authorities.
The 45th Infantry Division and 42nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army reached the camp during the final weeks of the war. American soldiers found thousands of prisoners and a train filled with corpses. Many survivors were suffering from starvation and typhus, and hundreds died shortly after liberation.
Dachau’s liberation is sometimes confused with the liberation of other camps. Buchenwald was liberated on 11 April 1945, while Bergen-Belsen was liberated by British forces on 15 April. Dachau’s surviving crematoria and camp grounds later became a memorial site.
