On what date did the Vienna Stock Exchange crash begin the Panic of 1873?

The story behind the answer

The Vienna Stock Exchange crash that began the Panic of 1873 occurred on May 9, 1873.

The date is known in German-speaking financial history as the Gründerkrach, or “Founders’ Crash.” A speculative boom had developed in Austria-Hungary, especially in railway companies, banks, and property-related ventures. When confidence broke, prices collapsed on the Vienna exchange and exposed the weakness of heavily leveraged businesses.

The panic did not remain confined to Vienna. Financial stress spread through Europe and reached the United States, where the failure of the investment bank Jay Cooke & Company in September 1873 helped trigger a major American banking crisis. The resulting downturn became a prolonged international depression.

May 9 is sometimes confused with later landmark crash dates, such as Black Thursday in 1929 or Black Monday in 1987. Those events belonged to different financial systems and economic eras, while the Vienna collapse was the opening shock of the 1873 panic.
