On what date did the Japanese Instrument of Surrender get signed aboard USS Missouri?
Answer
September 2, 1945
Answer
September 2, 1945
The Japanese Instrument of Surrender was signed aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
The ceremony took place in Tokyo Bay and formally recorded Japan’s acceptance of the Allied surrender terms. General Douglas MacArthur signed for the Allied powers, followed by representatives of the United States, China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
The date is distinct from the earlier public announcements. Japan’s intention to surrender was announced internationally on August 14 in the United States and on August 15 in Japan, while Hirohito’s recorded broadcast was heard by the Japanese public on August 15.
Because V-J Day is used for more than one related date, September 2 is sometimes overlooked. President Truman designated September 2 as the official V-J Day in connection with the formal signing, although many countries commemorate August 15 instead.
