On what date did the Dow Jones Industrial Average reach its closing low during the 1929–1932 Wall Street crash?

The story behind the answer

The Dow Jones Industrial Average reached its closing low of the 1929–1932 Wall Street crash on July 8, 1932.

The crash began with the dramatic selling of October 1929, but the market's ultimate low came nearly three years later. On July 8, 1932, the Dow closed at 41.22, roughly 89% below its September 1929 closing peak. The prolonged decline reflected the wider economic damage of the Great Depression, including bank failures, deflation, falling production, and unemployment.

October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday, is the most famous crash date, but it was not the final low. After 1932, the Dow began a powerful recovery, although it did not regain its September 1929 closing peak until 1954.

The date can also be confused with March 9, 1932, when the Dow reached an important intermediate low before falling again. July 8 is the recognized closing-bottom date for the full 1929–1932 bear market.
