On what date did the Dow Jones Industrial Average lose 777.68 points during the 2008 financial crisis?

The story behind the answer

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 777.68 points on September 29, 2008, during the global financial crisis.

The record point decline followed the U.S. House of Representatives’ initial rejection of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, commonly associated with the proposed $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program. Investors feared that lawmakers would not approve measures designed to stabilize the banking system and credit markets.

The Dow’s percentage loss that day was about 7 percent, smaller than its record percentage falls in 1987 and 1929. Point losses and percentage losses measure different things: as index levels rise over decades, the same percentage decline produces a much larger numerical point movement.

Congress passed a revised version of the rescue legislation on October 3, 2008. The crisis nevertheless continued, with stock markets reaching deeper lows in early 2009 as the recession and financial-sector stress spread internationally.
