On what date did the British army surrender at the Siege of Yorktown?
Answer
October 19, 1781
Answer
October 19, 1781
The British army surrendered at the Siege of Yorktown on October 19, 1781.
The surrender followed a Franco-American siege in Virginia led by George Washington and French commander Comte de Rochambeau. French naval forces under the Comte de Grasse helped prevent British relief by winning control of the Chesapeake approaches.
The capitulation of General Charles Cornwallis’s army was the final major land engagement of the American Revolutionary War. Fighting elsewhere continued after Yorktown, and the war formally ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The Yorktown victory nevertheless transformed peace negotiations by making continued British military efforts politically and financially difficult.
