On what date did the Boston Tea Party take place during the crisis over British taxation?

The story behind the answer

The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773, as a protest against British taxation and colonial trade policy.

Members of the Sons of Liberty and other participants boarded tea ships in Boston Harbor and dumped their cargo into the water. They opposed the Tea Act, which allowed the East India Company to sell tea directly in the colonies while retaining a tax that many colonists considered unconstitutional.

The protest followed a large public meeting at the Old South Meeting House. Governor Thomas Hutchinson refused to let the Dartmouth leave without paying the duty, and participants then destroyed the tea rather than allow it to be unloaded.

The British government responded with the Coercive Acts, called the Intolerable Acts by many colonists. Those measures intensified resistance and helped create the political conditions that led to war in 1775.
