On what date did the Berlin Wall fall?

The story behind the answer

The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989.

That evening, East German official Günter Schabowski announced new travel rules and indicated they took effect immediately. Crowds gathered at border crossings, and guards eventually opened the gates, allowing East Berliners to cross into West Berlin.

The Wall had divided Berlin since 13 August 1961. It became the most visible symbol of the Cold War division between communist East Germany and democratic West Germany. Its fall did not itself reunify Germany, but it accelerated political change across Europe.

German reunification formally took place on 3 October 1990. Sections of the Wall were preserved as memorials, including the East Side Gallery, where artists painted murals on a remaining stretch.
