Answer
June 22, 1945
Answer
June 22, 1945
The Battle of Okinawa officially ended on June 22, 1945.
The battle began on April 1, 1945, when U.S. forces landed on Okinawa, the largest of the Ryukyu Islands. It became the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War and lasted nearly three months. Fighting continued after organized Japanese resistance had largely collapsed, with Japanese commander General Mitsuru Ushijima dying on June 22.
Okinawa was strategically important because it was close enough to Japan to serve as a base for air and naval operations. The battle caused enormous military and civilian casualties and demonstrated the potential cost of an Allied invasion of Japan’s home islands.
Japan surrendered less than three months later. The experience at Okinawa influenced Allied planning for a possible invasion, although the eventual surrender followed the atomic bombings, Soviet entry into the war, and political decisions within Japan.
