On what date did the 1987 stock market crash reach its worst day, known as Black Monday?

The story behind the answer

The 1987 stock market crash reached its worst day on October 19, 1987, known as Black Monday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 508 points that day, a decline of 22.6 percent. It was the largest one-day percentage fall in the Dow’s history, and stock markets in several other countries also suffered severe losses.

The crash followed a sharp rise in share prices earlier in the decade. Concerns about interest rates, trade deficits, currency movements, and overvalued markets contributed to nervousness. Computerized trading strategies, including portfolio insurance, amplified selling pressure.

Black Monday is sometimes confused with Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, the most famous day of the Wall Street Crash. The 1987 collapse was different: markets recovered more quickly, and the United States did not enter a depression comparable to the 1930s.
