On what date did the 1929 U.S. stock-market crash reach the day called Black Tuesday?
Answer
October 29, 1929
Answer
October 29, 1929
Black Tuesday occurred on October 29, 1929, during the Wall Street Crash of 1929.
Massive selling overwhelmed the New York Stock Exchange as investors rushed to liquidate shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 12%, and trading volume reached a record for that era. Black Tuesday followed Black Thursday on October 24 and Black Monday on October 28.
The crash did not by itself create every condition of the Great Depression. Banking failures, monetary policy, falling demand, international debt problems, and shrinking production also contributed to the prolonged economic crisis.
A common mistake is to treat Black Tuesday as the only crash day. It was the most famous climax of a series of violent sessions, and the market continued falling after October 29 before eventually reaching a much lower bottom in 1932.
