Answer
April 26, 1989
Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori founded Game Freak on April 26, 1989.
Game Freak began earlier as a self-published video game magazine created by Tajiri in 1983. Sugimori later joined as its illustrator, and the pair transformed the name into a video game development company. The company was founded in Tokyo before Pokémon had entered production.
One of Game Freak's early titles was Quinty, a puzzle game released in Japan in 1989 and later published in North America as Mendel Palace. The studio continued making games for Nintendo and other companies before beginning work on Pocket Monsters.
Game Freak's Pokémon partnership with Nintendo eventually produced the 1996 Game Boy games. The company remains the principal developer of the main Pokémon role-playing games, although other studios have worked on spin-offs and selected remakes. The magazine, company, and Pokémon developer therefore share the same Game Freak name but refer to different stages of its history.
