On what date did RMS Titanic sink after striking an iceberg?

The story behind the answer

RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg.

The British passenger liner hit the iceberg late on April 14 during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The collision occurred at about 11:40 p.m. ship’s time, and Titanic sank at approximately 2:20 a.m. on April 15 in the North Atlantic Ocean.

More than 1,500 people died, while about 700 survived in lifeboats. Titanic carried lifeboats for fewer people than were aboard, a major factor in the scale of the disaster. The sinking led to major changes in maritime safety, including improved lifeboat requirements and the creation of the International Ice Patrol.

The wreck was located in 1985 by a joint American-French expedition led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel. The ship broke into two main sections, which rest on the seabed at a depth of roughly 3,800 metres.
