On what date did Japan’s official surrender ceremony in Hong Kong take place?

The story behind the answer

Japan’s official surrender ceremony in Hong Kong took place on 16 September 1945.

Japanese military officials signed surrender documents at Hong Kong Government House on 16 September 1945. The ceremony marked the formal end of Japan’s occupation of Hong Kong, which had begun after the colony fell in December 1941.

The British reoccupation began earlier. Royal Navy forces arrived on 30 August, and British troops liberated prisoners and re-established control while the formal arrangements were completed. Admiral Cecil Harcourt accepted the Japanese surrender on behalf of the Allies.

The ceremony is sometimes confused with the date Japan announced its national surrender or with the date British forces arrived. Japan announced surrender in August, and the British returned to Hong Kong at the end of that month, but the local surrender ceremony occurred in September. British rule resumed after the ceremony, while Chinese representatives were also present.
