Answer
September 12, 1945
Answer
September 12, 1945
Japanese forces formally surrendered in Singapore on September 12, 1945.
The ceremony took place at Singapore’s Municipal Building, now known as City Hall. General Seishirō Itagaki surrendered the Japanese forces in the region to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Allied Commander of the Southeast Asia Command.
Singapore had been occupied by Japan since the British surrender in February 1942. During the occupation, the city was renamed Shōnantō and experienced severe shortages, repression, and economic disruption.
The September ceremony followed the signing aboard USS Missouri on September 2. Regional surrender ceremonies occurred on different dates because Japanese forces across Southeast Asia reported to separate commands and had to be disarmed locally.
