On what date did Japan announce its surrender in 1945, as heard in Japan?

The story behind the answer

Japan announced its surrender on 15 August 1945, as heard in Japan.

Emperor Hirohito’s recorded radio address, known as the Gyokuon-hōsō or Jewel Voice Broadcast, was transmitted at noon Japan Standard Time. It announced that Japan had accepted the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, though it used formal language rather than plainly saying, “Japan surrenders.”

The date can be confusing because the announcement occurred on 14 August in much of the United States and the Americas, owing to time-zone differences. The formal surrender ceremony came later, on 2 September 1945, aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

In Japan, 15 August is associated with the announcement and remembrance of the war’s end. The formal legal end of hostilities is more closely connected with the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender. Both dates are therefore linked with V-J Day, depending on the country and convention.
