On what date did Hirohito's surrender broadcast reach Japan?
Answer
15 August 1945
Answer
15 August 1945
Hirohito's surrender broadcast reached Japan on 15 August 1945.
At noon Japan Standard Time, NHK broadcast a recording of the emperor reading the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War. The message announced Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration, although it used formal and indirect language rather than plainly stating that the country had surrendered.
The date is widely treated in Japan as the day the war ended for the Japanese public. In English-speaking countries, however, the date associated with V-J Day can vary. News reached the United States during 14 August, while the formal signing occurred on 2 September aboard USS Missouri.
The broadcast came after the Hiroshima bombing on 6 August, the Soviet declaration of war and Nagasaki bombing on 9 August, and a final political decision by Japan's leaders. A failed military coup attempt tried to prevent the recording from being broadcast, but the recording survived and was transmitted the next day.
