On what date did Hirohito's broadcast announce Japan had accepted the Potsdam Declaration?

The story behind the answer

Hirohito’s broadcast announced Japan had accepted the Potsdam Declaration on August 15, 1945.

The radio address, formally called the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War, was recorded by Emperor Hirohito on August 14 and broadcast at noon Japanese time the next day. It told the Japanese public that the government had accepted the Allied declaration and ordered the armed forces to stop fighting.

The speech followed the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan. Hirohito referred to a new and cruel bomb and to the rapidly changing military situation, but did not use the ordinary word “surrender” directly.

August 15 is often called V-J Day in Japan and the United Kingdom. In the United States, the announcement was heard on August 14 because of time-zone differences, while the formal surrender ceremony took place on September 2.
