On what date did Fyodor Dostoevsky die in Saint Petersburg?
Answer
9 February 1881
Answer
9 February 1881
Fyodor Dostoevsky died in Saint Petersburg on 9 February 1881.
The date is given in the Gregorian calendar. In the Russian Empire’s Julian calendar, the corresponding date was 28 January 1881. Dostoevsky died after suffering from serious health problems, including emphysema and recurring epileptic seizures. He was 59 years old.
His death came only a few years after the completion of The Brothers Karamazov, published in book form in 1880. By then he was one of Russia’s most prominent writers, and his public appearances, including a famous speech at the unveiling of a monument to Alexander Pushkin in Moscow, had made him a major cultural figure.
Dostoevsky was buried at the Tikhvin Cemetery in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in Saint Petersburg. Calendar conversion explains why some sources print 28 January and others 9 February. Both dates refer to the same day in 1881, but 9 February is the modern Gregorian date.
