On what date did “Black Tuesday” mark the peak selling day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash?

The story behind the answer

“Black Tuesday” marked the peak selling day of the 1929 Wall Street Crash on October 29, 1929.

Investors sold about 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange that day, overwhelming buyers and causing prices to collapse. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 12%, following steep losses on Black Thursday and Black Monday.

The crash did not single-handedly cause the Great Depression, but it severely damaged confidence, reduced wealth, and weakened banks and businesses. Earlier speculation, buying stocks on margin, unequal income distribution, and fragile banking practices had already made the economy vulnerable.

Black Tuesday is sometimes mistakenly treated as the crash’s only day. In reality, the market’s decline unfolded over several trading sessions in October and continued into 1932, when the Dow reached its low for the bear market.
