On what date did Apollo 11’s lunar module land on the Moon?
Answer
20 July 1969
Answer
20 July 1969
Apollo 11’s lunar module landed on the Moon on 20 July 1969.
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin guided Eagle to the lunar surface on 20 July 1969, with touchdown occurring at 20:17 UTC. The landing site was later called Tranquility Base. Armstrong stepped onto the surface several hours afterward, early on 21 July UTC.
Apollo 11 launched from Florida on 16 July and returned to Earth on 24 July. The landing date can therefore be confused with the launch, moonwalk, or splashdown dates. The distinction matters because the first landing and the first human steps occurred on different calendar dates in Coordinated Universal Time.
The mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s goal of landing humans on the Moon and returning them safely before the end of the 1960s. It also demonstrated the complete sequence of lunar-orbit rendezvous, descent, surface operations, ascent, and return.
