Answer
July 20, 1969
Apollo 11 made the first crewed landing on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
The lunar module Eagle landed in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility with astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard. Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia. Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface several hours after landing, followed by Aldrin.
The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 16, 1969. It fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s 1961 goal of landing a person on the Moon and returning that person safely to Earth before the end of the decade. Apollo 11 returned to Earth on July 24 after collecting lunar samples and conducting experiments.
The mission was part of the United States’ Apollo program, which ultimately sent six crews to the lunar surface between 1969 and 1972. Apollo 11’s landing became a defining achievement of the Space Race and a major event in modern American history.
