On what date are Nobel Prize in Economics laureates traditionally honored at the Nobel ceremony?

The story behind the answer

Nobel Prize in Economics laureates are traditionally honored at the Nobel ceremony on 10 December.

The date marks the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896. Nobel’s will established prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace; the economics prize was created later, but its award ceremony follows the same Nobel tradition.

Prize announcements usually take place in October, while the formal ceremonies occur in December. The Stockholm ceremony presents the economics, physics, chemistry, medicine, and literature awards. The Nobel Peace Prize is presented separately in Oslo, Norway, also on 10 December.

The economics award is formally the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. It is commonly called the Nobel Prize in Economics, but it was established in 1968 by Sweden’s central bank rather than being one of Nobel’s original prizes.
